Woman surprised by EV facts from southern Illinois EV repair experts

Fun facts from the Southern Illinois EV pros at PMR Automotive in Marion, IL

Electric vehicles (EVs) are often seen as futuristic, maintenance-free machines that just need a plug and a charger. But the truth? They’re still cars—and like any car, they’ve got quirks that might surprise you.

Here are some fun, lesser-known facts about EVs that might just change how you think about your ride:

⚡ 1. Some EVs Still Need Oil Changes

That’s right—just because there’s no traditional engine doesn’t mean oil is completely gone. Many EV drive motors are cooled with oil. That means filters and oil service may still be part of your maintenance routine. While manufacturers have a high mileage recommendation, we recommend changing your EV's oil and filter about once per year to allow your major components be regularly monitored for health.

⚡ 2. Your Battery Has Its Own Climate Control

Batteries like to stay in a “just right” temperature zone—not too hot, not too cold. To make that happen, your EV uses its A/C and heating system to regulate battery temps. This system can run even when the car is parked, drawing down the battery so it stays healthy. It also means your A/C system is more crucial than in a traditional gas vehicle. If you lose your EV's air conditioning, it's not just an inconvenience, it can shorten the life of your main battery!

⚡ 3. Brakes Last Way Longer Than You Think

Because EVs use regenerative braking (where the motor helps slow the car while putting energy back into the battery), brake pads and rotors don’t wear as fast. Many EV owners find their brake service intervals are years apart compared to traditional cars.

⚡ 4. EVs Can Weigh More Than a Pickup Truck

The battery pack in an EV is heavy—sometimes thousands of pounds on its own. That’s why EVs can actually weigh as much as some full-size trucks. This extra weight is also why tire wear and suspension maintenance are still super important.

⚡ 5. Your “Fuel Gauge” Isn’t Always Accurate

Unlike a gas tank, which uses an arm that floats in the tank to tell your gauge where your level is, battery charge estimates depend on temperature, driving habits, terrain, and even how much you use your A/C. That’s why your range might suddenly look different day-to-day.

⚡ 6. They Still Have 12-Volt Batteries

Even the most high-tech EV still relies on a traditional 12-volt car battery (though Tesla is starting to roll out a 16-volt car battery) for things like lights, locks, infotainment systems, and more. And just like in a gas-powered car, that battery can die and leave you stranded if ignored.

⚡ 7. Cold Weather Zaps Range

When it’s cold outside, your EV uses more energy to heat the battery and your cabin. This can cut your range by as much as 30–40%. Making sure your battery has optimal health before the cold hits can help keep your range as high as possible. That’s not a defect—it’s just physics.

⚡ 8. Tires Matter More Than Ever

Because EVs deliver instant torque (translation: they’re quick off the line), and because they’re heavier than most cars, tires wear faster. Special EV-rated tires are designed to handle the extra stress, help maximize range, and reduce noise. You can install traditional tires on your EV, but be prepared for more road noise and quicker wear on those tires.
